Answering questions about a firing in a positive way may seem like a daunting task, here are some examples of how you can achieve it:

1. Being cut loose was really a blessing in disguise - It has presented me with the opportunity to explore jobs that better suit my interests and qualifications.  I am really looking forward to finding a position which allows me to utilize my skills in HTML, like the one you’re interviewing me for.  Would you like to hear more about my work in web development?

2. My job was outsourced to India - That’s too bad because people familiar with my work say it is superior and fairly priced.

If you’re taking a plane or train to a job interview try to arrive a day early.  This allows times for flight delays and allows you to get a good nights rest before the interview.

Question: What do you lack?

Common Mistake: over disclosure (the work is not familiar to me; I do not have special education, lazy, hot-tempered etc.)

You should name 2-3 drawbacks, skillfully presenting them as advantages, for example: “I have been called a work-a-holic so I am trying to work on a better balance.”

Question: What are your strongest attributes?

Common Mistake: a modest answer: “Let the associates judge… “.

It’s best to be prepared to name several attributes and achievements which you are proud of.  If you worked hard on something take credit for it! Professionalism, truthfulness, etc. are always valued but they are also expected.  Instead tell them something unique.

Go It Alone

In some cases a friend of spouse is pressuring a candidate to interview for a job.  Other times the candidate is nervous and feels they would be more comfortable if a friend went along.  Under no circumstance is it acceptable to bring someone with you to an interview.

Exception: Handicap applicants can and should bring assistance as needed

Bring a Pen & Paper

You don’t necessarily need an entire briefcase.  The best thing to carry is a thin leather case which holds a legal pad and a few pens.  But always bring a pen and paper, don’t ask or expect the interviewer to provide you with either.

Dress the Part

Selecting an interview outfit can be stressful.  Some experts advise putting on half the perspective monthly salary.  For example if you expect to receive a job paying $7000/mo, put on $3500.  But the best rule on this topic is to follow the corporate culture and ask for help.  If you know someone who works for the company or has experience with them inquire as to the standard dress.  If you don’t know anyone sit on a bench outside the office and observe how employees dress.

Know Something about the Company

Know something about the Company you are applying to.  Are they expanding in Europe?  Have they recently changed CEOs?  Where did the CEO work before and what is he or she known for?

If you can speak to where the company is going and how you contribute to that – you are sure to get the job.  For example if the company is expanding operations in France you might tell the interviewer:

I read recently that you’re currently expanding your operations in France.  I actually speak French and did a semester abroad and lived in France for 5 months.
